Lessons on Personal Finance from Benjamin Franklin

Written by Old Glory Bank | Sep 9, 2025 8:43:52 PM

Benjamin Franklin never carried a debit card or checked his credit score, but make no mistake: he knew money, and he knew freedom.

Centuries before “financial literacy” became a buzzword, Franklin was preaching the value of thrift, savings, and self-reliance. He warned about laziness, encouraged entrepreneurship, and reminded Americans that independence wasn’t just won on the battlefield; it was earned at the dinner table, the workbench, and the ledger.

One of his most famous lines still rings true today:

“Beware of little expenses. A small leak will sink a great ship.”

Franklin saw financial discipline not just as a matter of personal success, but as a matter of national survival. In his mind, a free people had to be a responsible people. In many ways, that’s still the case.

At Old Glory Bank, we believe in that kind of financial freedom: the kind that’s built on ownership, discipline, and common sense, not political games or global mandates.

Franklin didn’t believe in shortcuts. Neither do we.

He’d be the first to question why so many banks today hide fees in fine print, punish people for supporting the wrong cause, or use algorithms to tell Americans how to spend their money. Frankly, we think he’d be appalled.

That’s why we do things differently.

We don’t drain your account with hidden fees. We don’t penalize patriotism. We certainly don’t funnel your hard-earned money into anti-American agendas.

Instead, we help your money work for you, the way Franklin would have wanted.

Whether it’s avoiding debt, building savings, or simply keeping more of what you earn, we’re here to make sure every American has the tools to live free, and stay free.
